Sundance Vacations is the Fastest Growing Travel Company in Pennsylvania

Wilkes-Barre, PA (August 19, 2009) – Sundance Vacations is the fastest-growing travel company in Pennsylvania according to Inc. 500/5000. The company was recently recognized by Inc Magazine as one of the nation’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America. While Sundance Vacations ranked 4,718 on the Inc. 500/5000 list, no other Pennsylvania travel business ranked higher than this Wilkes-Barre based wholesale travel company.

The 2009 Inc. 5000, revealed on Inc.com, serves as a unique report card on the U.S. economy. Despite the ongoing recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $214 billion, up $29 billion from last year, with a median three-year growth rate of 126 percent. The Inc. 5000 are responsible for creating more than one million jobs since their founding; making the list perhaps the best example of the impact private, fast-growing companies can have on the economy.

Sundance Vacations is honored to be a part of the Inc. 500/5000. The company’s growth despite the on-going recession was recently noted in a Wilkes-Barre local newspaper The Times Leader by reporter Ron Bartizek. Bartizek beat Inc. 500/5000 to the punch with his piece “Sundance finds a Sweet Spot in our Sour Economy”. “While the daily economic news continues to be gloomy, this recognition is a bright spot for Sundance Vacations and our 700 national employees,” explained Sundance Vacations President John Dowd.

The Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by the first week of 2005, and therefore able to show four full calendar years of sales. Additionally, they have to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent — not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies — as of December 31, 2008. Revenue in 2005 must have been at least $200,000, and revenue in 2008 must have been at least $2 million. The top 10 percent of companies on the list comprise the Inc. 500, now in its 28th year. Tina Dowd co-founded Sundance Vacations in 1991 with her partner and husband John Dowd. In her 20 years with the company, Tina grew Sundance Vacations from a small start-up telemarketing office to a leading provider of affordable wholesale vacations, with over 700 employees and over 80,000 travelers nationwide. Tina’s award winning vision has guided the growth of the company straight to the Inc. 500/5000 Fastest Growing Companies List. Mrs. Dowd accepted a Stevie Award for Employer of the Year in 2010 for Women in Business and several awards from the Best Places to Work Group in more recent years.

The Dowd family generously supports many charities including St. Vincent DePaul Soup kitchen, Wyoming Valley Children’s Association, Volunteers of America, the Wyoming Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and many others. She is a member of the Luzerne Foundation Millennium Circle. Tina is also a former board member for the Northeast Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau and the Lehighton Area School District. Mrs. Dowd loves traveling, and her favorite vacation destination is where she and husband John Dowd spent their honeymoon, Maui, Hawaii.
