Kuleana Club, Maui, HI
Why I like it? “Have you been to Maui? It’s amazing and is consistently named the world’s best island. The weather is warm year round and Maui has more miles of swimmable beaches than any other island in Hawaii. You can also find white, black, and even red sand beaches there. While visiting Maui, check out Haleakala Crater, where you can stand atop the 10,023 ft. summit and watch the sunrise like you’ve never seen it before.”
Myrtle Beach Resort, SC
Why I like it? “Perfect beach vacation. Period. Beach front resort with an oceanfront pool, onsite tiki bar and lazy river. Amenities, Amenities, Amenities. This resort has them all. 3 outdoor and 2 indoor pools. No concrete jungle here. This resort combines the perfect amount of shade trees and landscaping to ease the heat. If you can tear yourself from your beach chair, Myrtle Beach is also the golf capital of the world.”
Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, FL
Why I like it? “This property is just steps to the sparkling, white sands of iconic Ft. Lauderdale beach. Spend lazy days parked in a chair listening to the waves lap at the shore, then stroll the beachfront promenade for easy access to restaurants, bars, and shopping. While the condos all offer kitchens the nearby nightlife and world class dining options are too good to pass up. Try the speakeasy called Stache. Did I mention the views from every room?”
Vacation: It’s Good for America
It’s no surprise America has a problem taking time off—to the tune of 705 million unused days—but we’re getting better about it. In 2017, Americans used nearly a half-day (0.4 days) more than the previous year. And the best part about it? Its the third year in a row we’ve seen an increase. In 2014, America reached its lowest point of vacation usage and since then, we’ve seen a positive trend upward. Americans are now taking a full day more than back in 2014. Clearly, Americans need to take more of their well-earned vacation days, but did you know that there are serious benefits to taking time to travel? While the average employee is taking 17.2 days of vacation, less than half (47%) of that time—just eight days—is used for travel. And many Americans do want to use it to travel: the majority (84%) say it is important to travel with their time off.
Every year more than half of Americans (52%) fail to use all their time off, creating a stock pile of 705 million unused vacation days, up from 662 million days the year before.
“National Plan for Vacation Day is an opportunity for Americans and for America. And who better than the travel industry to help plan the perfect vacation?” said Roger Dow, President and CEO, U.S. Travel Association. “America offers something for everyone, whether you prefer a sunny day at the beach or a snowball fight in the mountains.
We encourage every American to plan their time off to explore our great country.”
The most effective remedy for American workers who want to use more vacation days is better planning. Yet just over half (52%) of households set aside time to plan the use of their vacation time each year.
“Sundance Vacations is celebrating National Plan for Vacation Day because we want to encourage Americans to take their well-deserved time off,” said Co-owner John Dowd. “And what better way to take a day than to travel? By committing to planning on January 29, Americans can all reap the benefits of taking a break while giving yourself something to look forward to.”
Research shows that planners have a distinct advantage over non-planners: They use more of their time, take longer vacations, and are happier.
- 53 percent of planners took all of their vacation time vs. 43 percent of non-planners.
- Planners are also more likely than non-planners to use all or most of their time off to travel (33% to 18%).
- More planners report they are “very” or “extremely” happy with their personal relationships (81% vs. 68%), health and well-being (56% vs. 43%), company (57% vs. 50%), and job (56% vs. 48%) compared to non-planners.
To help employees get their vacation days on the calendar, U.S. Travel Association created a vacation planning tool. By simply entering the number of days off earned, users can plot out their trips or vacations for the year, export to their work or personal calendar, and share with their family and co-workers.
National Plan for Vacation Day is celebrated the last Tuesday in January as a day to encourage Americans to plan their vacation days for the rest of the year at the start of the year.
