Currently about 20 to 30 percent of the total cost of an airline ticket is made up of taxes and fees. With other taxes, such as the ones for alcohol, tobacco and firearms being less than that of airline taxes, it has prompted a movement to create a national standard in the way the airlines are being taxed. Gary Kelly, chairman, president and CEO of Southwest Airlines has been one of the most vocal supporters of this cause. “Revising the federal tax structure on air travel would allow airlines to better serve their customers,” Kelly said. “We’re working to keep flying affordable and punitive taxes get in the way of that effort.”
